RA2 Hints Tips and Tricks

Another article from Omen, letting us in on a few of his RA2 ideas...and some more RA2 hints from Lash at the end.

Now, it seems these days more of us are getting into Rocket Arena, and well I can't say I blame us because I've been smitten by it too. Anyway there has been talk about Clan Wars using this mod so I thought I might give suggest some pointers for when we play as a team together. (ie. pickups.)

These are NOT rules to live by, and I imagine some of us will probably develop and build onto these suggestions later to make an "official" clan strategy. Most of them are common sense and aren't as "strict" (I guess) as some of our CTF tactics.

Okay, here we go:

TRAVEL IN PACKS. It's harder to do this in RA2 than CTF, because we all don't respawn in the base and we can't comunicate our positions very easily. Therefor go out as you usually would and if you encounter the enemy, kill him(duh!) but if you come across a fellow team mate go together. Of course, when there are more than one of you a few problems occur, so.....

SPREAD OUT. Put a decent amount of space between you and everyone else. Don't travel single file (a JAG with a railgun won't believe his luck) and keep a good distance from the guy in front of you. A lot of the time what happens is the guy on "point" encounters a few bad guys around the corner. Of course he starts firing and tries to retreat..... but he can't, because the guys behind him are blocking him. This is where your teammates pretty much become more deadly than your enemies. Instead of running forward to "help" the point guy, anticipate that he will fall back and lead the bad guys to you. Also the guy at the back should regularly check behind him, even if the guys at the front are having a firefight. (Seen it happen too many times.... one of them sneaks around behind you and then.... kaplowie!)

SPECIALISATION. I'm not so sure about this one. Instead of everyone in the group running around with Rocket Launchers, try having a few alternate weapons - someone with a grenade launcher for the corners, someone with a hyperblaster/chaingun to keep the enemy occupied while the guys with the Rocket Launchers hammer em. Works well in theory but so did communism.

CONVERGENCE POINTS. There seem to be places on every pickup map where everyone ends up at the same place, sooner or later. I'm sure this has a strategic value somewhere, but you can count on either meeting a friend -or foe - here. If you wanted to take it really seriously we could designate a point on each map to meet up.

Of course the above suggestions are all well and good, but we can't count on group tactics exclusively. As we all know, you'll often respawn surrounded by the other team or alienated from absolutely everybody and making it to a team mate intact isn't always possible. So a great deal of "Rugged Individualsim" will probably come in handy!

Send all positve comments to Omen, any negative comments can go to Rebem because he could(should?) have stopped me!

RA2 Tips - Lash

It is sometimes a really bad idea to attack in packs and this is mainly because you can get in the way and can cause the death of a fellow team member. When you know someone is in a spot the best method is to send 2 people - 1 from the front, 1 from the back. If one dies the other should finish him off. Don't be affraid of self sacrifice it can sometimes win you the match.

A lot of the time in RA2 there is just one factor to win a match and it sadly comes down to non-teamwork. Basically there are some people out there who are lazy or just want cheap kills. These are the people who hide until there is a good chance that they can score free kills or just win the match by sitting there.

Killing a player is not as easy as you think and requires lots of skill. Most average players stick to their best weapons like rail and rocket. These are good starter weapons but are not very good when you both are low on health. Most good RA2 players vary their weapons a lot, depending on the situation. The best weapons in my oppinion in RA2 are the fast and wide range weapons, ie: Super ShotGun and the Chaingun. Applying a tatic for RA2 is especially important and should be effective. The most basic of tatics which is gradually being recognised is the 'Start and Finish'. This is basically using a starter weapon : Rail or Rocket and then get at least two hits in and then the finishing move to a wide ranged/rapid weapon : Chaingun, Super Shotgun and Hyperblaster.

You may laugh at this at first but when you think about it, running away is a particularly good skill. This can lead enemies into ambushes and so on.
