Alright you asked for it!
Okay only one person bothered to write in. I was more or less expecting that anyway.... so, I've decided to change "Ask Omen" to "Omen Says" where I will dictate to you chumps what I think and you can sit there and like it. This will be a weekly thing, as you will notice the good old clan page is sometimes a little bit thin on reading material, and I think a regular column is what we need. So this is my attempt. However I will still accept feed back if you happen to disagree or if you would like me to discuss a particular topic.
To start with, I will use the one email I recieved from JJJ:
heres what i dont like.....
... when im playing on the Gib2 wantree server and the on the other team wont ready up until i say ill join their clan. this person being stuntwig of the freak clan. its not as if there were only 2, the server was pretty much full(well i think 3on3 counts)
Thank you JJJ for bothering to write in.
This is an unusual situation you describe to me. I can't ever say it's ever happened to me (is that good?) but I guess it is very flattering to be "railroaded" into a clan, as it does say something for you skills, however you don't seem to hold the clan in question in very high esteem. But I don't think thats the point your trying to make.
I think we need to address this whole clan "thing". It seems that the whole community is driven by clans these days. It's really funny to see newbies join a game of quake and find out about these "clans", and immediatly insist on joining one even if they've only been playing for five minutes. By the same token, some clans are actively pursuing new recruits, and it's not uncommon for them to tell each other "only recruit good people". Unfortunately skilled players aren't going to want to join a clan they've never heard of or are full of 13 year old pricks, and the clan sometimes won't understand..... as I think occured in JJJ's case. I'm sure "stuntwig" was only joking around but I can imagine it being very annoying for everyone concerned for "stuntwig" to hold the game up like that.
Clans, when set up and lead properly, can be a wonderful thing, unfortunately this is not always the case. But we don't have to be in one. For example, Rogues Gallery is a site dedicated to "One man clans", basically those who don't want to be in a clan for whatever reason, and yet still enjoy the competition environment. Some people don't like having to practice or indulge in "teamwork".
I've once heard it said that "The good thing about clans is that anyone can start one. The bad thing about clans is that anyone can start one." How true. Clans start and die all the time. Some make it and a lot don't. Why, I can't tell you, but perhaps we need to realise that you don't have to be a kickass clan to be recognised. Look at us. We prefer CTF, and the only clan that will play us at CTF is Jaguar. They continue to thump us into the ground EVERY time and yet we keep challenging them. And yet we haven't thrown in the towel or disbanded because we're crap, Xtro writes the war up the next day usually taking the piss out of us and then he (stupid fool!) challanges them again. And although we lose to Jaguar, although we lose to Mogh, we still frequently get people mailing us asking to join. Perhaps some of the other, younger clans, such as the "freak" clan, can figure out why for themselves.
Now I'd just like to leave you with following thought; The game is the game. Without the clans, there is still the game. Without the game there are no clans. So just play the damn game!
Mail me your thoughts on this, or any other matter you think important. Or don't, I'm going to write another article next week regardless!
