What can I say. It's Star Wars, you have to love Star Wars!
Well, from the one level demo I played today, I would say prognosis: good. Some nice graphics, even though the demo I played was somewhat on the sparse side of things. No steep learning curve, and I was playing a decent game in about a minute.
There are five available craft; only one in the demo is usable (damn that's typical. First only one scungy level, then they show you five beasty looking craft and let you fly one. Man, I'm starting to wonder why I bother downloading these things). As you would expect, the X-wing is the first off the mark - the token all-rounder, and the only one you can use in the demo. Next is the A-Wing (damnit I really wanted to take the A-Wing for a spin) which sacrifices some armament and defence for top speed; then a snowspeeder, great for hugging the ground and manuverability; then the Y-Wing, slow with mass armour and sheilds, and is suited for bombing; and a new addition to the Star Wars universe (I think, I dunno, I'm an Aliens fan myself) is the V-Wing, which is fast and manuverable, with a not unreasonable payload of weapons delivered with stealth. However, as with the A-Wing these advantages come at the reduction in defensive sheilds and armour.
As you would expect with a LucasArts production there is a lot of visual polish with lots of sampled Star Wars sounds. The game ran as smooth as silk on my system at 640 by 480, and even though I have a voodoo2 in my system, I found myself just scraping over the minimum spec mark - 32 megs of RAM required (I have 32), processor 166 MMX (I have a 200MMX, although I'm overclocking) and a 4meg 3d accelerator are required. Looks like I better upgrade ASAP, my once mean machine can barely handle the next generation of games, with or without my Voodoo2.
Well I'm not a great fan of flying games, and this is not a simulator - this is action. Which is a good thing, from my perspective. I reckon this could be a good multiplayer game - it's simple , easy to get into, and with some cunning enhancements (such as having to destroy the enemy teams base or something like that) I reckon it could take off. (Sorry about that pun. Really.) As usual, below are some screenies. Mmmmmm. Por... er screenies.
Tomorrow: Probably a review of Alien vs Predator! I like por... er aliens.

Yeah Baby! | This is a cut scene over Mos Isly. (Did I spell that right? Somehow I don't think so.) Your mission is to shoot everything flying over Mos Isly. 'Nuff said.

Mmmmmm. Targets. | Yeah, heres the cannon fodder. Basically just Imperial Droids, with the strength of toilet paper and if your VERY lucky they may shoot back. I think theres an allied X-Wing in there somewhere too. Later in the level there are some Tie Bombers who are doing their thing over Mos Isly (bombing). Better watch out, they like to fly in circles and if you get in the way they may attempt to shoot you. Don't make em like they used to I guess.

Snazzy | Select your ship bit, this pic taken just after selecting the X-Wing (as if I had a whole lot of choice). There are droids and technicians walking around to give the hanger a "busy" effect, and you get a nice voice over telling you about the strengths and weaknesses of each craft. In the background you can see the V-Wing. Isn't there meant to be something called a B-Wing? I remember I had friends who were Star Wars freaks who talked about B-Wings. I think.
