Save Tha Smack Domain Campaign
Category / Links
Local Perth internet gaming landmark "Gamesmack" is in danger of disappearing forever. Stress says:
"For a 1 year renewal, this will set me back about $70 - a 3 year renewal will cost $210 (plus 2 more years.) Right at the moment, it's money I need to spend on feeding myself etc. so I'm a little worried about wether or not I will be able to renew the domain at all."Can you help? Click here (or email) and make a donation.
Stress told me that if you donate $1 now, when Gamesmack turns a profit he'll send you a cheque for $1000 !!!*
BF1942 v1.2 Patch is Here!
Category / Games
Well it's finally arrived. You can grab it from AusGamers who had this important warning:
"Update: 3DGamers uploaded a incorrect version of this file rather early in the game, and alot of other mirrors then downloaded that version from there, the version that was on 3dgamers will generate version errors when joining dedicated servers, if you get this error, download the file from AusGamers, or other quality mirroring sites and reinstall."heh I like the implied insult, '...other quality mirroring sites...'. They also have the server install.
SiliconDawn mentions this link for WAIX users.
Wolfenstein 5K !
This is the most amazing 5K entry and the coolest use of javascript I have ever seen. This bloke has written a Wolfenstein 3D clone using just under 5K of javascript. Hilarious!
Game consoles please more than the eye
Category / Lifestyle
With the increased interactivity of new game consoles these days, there are going to be people that are going to use those enhancements for extra stimuli. As always there are going to be a few preachy religious types that think all things good are a spawn of Satan.
My option is, if it feels good then do it.
EvEm Banners
Are you getting sick of all these new banners? Think you could do a better job?
Well if you think you can do better, make one (or two and more) and show it to us by leaving a comment here (sorry you can't add "img" html to comments just paste the link). All the approved banners will be added to the rotation.
The image has to be 500x80 pixels and "fade" to black on the right hand side.
Dan Reviews the New Logitech Mice
Category / Hardware
Looks like the MX700 steals the show. Dan suggests this is the first cordless a gamer might actually want to buy. Not only for it's recharging cradle but also because it has a sample rate of 125Hz which puts it on par with USB mice.
There you go Mil, a big picture of a mouse. Does EvEm still look like an ad for a cooling fan company?
The Bargain of the Year!
I spied this one in this month's APC mag. It's from an ad panel from Computer Wearhouse Sydney advertising Hercules, Radeon based cards. It made me do a double take but then I saw that the Radeon 9000 part was $700+; obviously got their prices mixed up. Bugger, I thought all my christmases had come at once. I think Computer Wearhouse Sydney will be getting a lot of phone calls about now :).
Cooling at Comdex 2002
Category / Hardware
Anand has a groovy write up about all the displays of cooling (my current favourite topic) and case hardware companies at this years Comdex. Of course my current favourite company, Zalman, is there showing off their spiffy looking 7000cu unit:
"The CNPS7000-Cu weighs in at 775g and is almost entirely copper. Even more impressive was the fan which never peaked over 32dBA, but on average ran around 26dBA. What is the selling point on these heatsinks? They are capable of running at 0.20C/W"Click the pic to see it, as well as a fanless Radeon 9700!!
A Little Experiment With Fans
Category / Hardware
Got my Zalman Cooler yesterday as you know but I just wasn't happy with how I installed the fan and bracket. So I started fiddling with things. Read on for some surprising results!
nVidia NV30 is Hot!

...as you can see by the HUGE cooling system on the reference board. This card is supposed to be 4 times as fast as the 4600. We've always dreamed about having real time cinema quality animation in our games; I don't think it's very far away. Imagine playing Lord Of The Rings on your PC the same quality as the movie....
Dude, you're gettin' a Zalman!
Category / Hardware
Hey my Zalman flower cooler arrived in the mail today, the CNPS6000-Cu model. It's extremely nice to install, unlike the Volcano 7 which was heart attack material. Firstly the base is smaller and secondly it comes with a well designed clip and installation tool. You can read all about it on Dan's.
Marketing To Gamers

Do companies really understand their customers? You really have to wonder about companies who try to sell stuff to the gaming croud. Here's a couple of tragic examples.
Vhavoc Interviews CE Mod Team
Category / Games
Titled "Behind the scenes of the Codename Eagle mod" Sucka interviews Rex and Mcshlong about their Codename Eagle mod for Battlefield 1942.
"Rex: Codename Eagle had direct control over the vehicles, so you felt as though you were driving an extension of yourself. Bf1942 has the more realistic approach to physics, both good and bad. I do say I do not terribly like the falling physics of Bf1942. I loved that CE cartoon flailing of the arms! Violence is another issue, cartoon violence is great. In BF, there is very little, so we are trying to add as much CE style violence as we can."Read the rest...
Personally I can't wait for this one, Relic introduced all of us to CE way back when and we learned to appreciate its humour despite its quirks. Honestly, I have never laughed so much while playing a game. it even inspired me to prose.
Am I the only one who's favourite is the motorcycle and sidecar? You can really get some air in that thing with a good run up :). And you just can't beat the cycle-flag run with your buddy in the sidecar. You didn't even have to slow down, just slide out over the flag open the throttle and hoon out of there, yeehaa!
A Little AA Comparison With BF1942
Category / Gallery O' Gibbage
With nothing better to post tonight I thought I'd take a few screenies with Anti Aliasing turned on and compare them to normal. My card is a Leadtek Winfast GF4 4200 64meg. here's 4 pairs of screenies of similar objects the first with 4x AA and the second with no AA. See if you can pick the difference.

My Awsome BF1942 Case Mod
Category / Hardware
I finally decided now was my time. Now I'd attempt to create something so that I'd qualify for the world wide fraternity of DIY case modders. And because BF1942 is the game of the century I thought that should be my theme. Come in and have a look, I hope you'll be impressed.
Gamesden CE: The legend lives on
Many people have heard about the fabled Gamesden Codename Eagle server... Local gamers know it is a legend that will live on as long as we treasure the memories of good times we had there.

This italian gaming website details their gaming server rack. From the translation it seems to be 6 1.7-1.8 Ghz Athlon servers in a 7U rack mount case communicating through a dedicated external switch. Check out the custom case holding the 6 motherboards, 6 power supplies with 3 huge intake and 3 exhaust fans. *drool*

Doom 3 Alpha Help
Category / Games

Well it seems someone has been extra efficient hoovering the internet of any traces of information about the Leaked Doom 3 Alpha. Well as Evil Empire Gaming is quite the back water gaming/nerd news website I see this as a cheap way to get some attention. Or another way to look at it: noone ever reads this site so they'll probably never find it.

Damn The Internet!
Category / Links
Matmos pointed out this cool website today. Not just because they link to us and describe us as "one of biggest hangouts of fat, four eyed, nose picking nerds on the net" but also because they're funny.
Yes we all know the web is full of excitable, creative minds keen to explore all the many multi-facteted multi-faceted possibilities for self-expression that the internet provides. Pitty Pity we're not all as tactless as these bastards. Larf!
