Well it seems someone has been extra efficient hoovering the internet of any traces of information about the Leaked Doom 3 Alpha. Well as Evil Empire Gaming is quite the back water gaming/nerd news website I see this as a cheap way to get some attention. Or another way to look at it: noone ever reads this site so they'll probably never find it.

"i figured someone would have been smart enough to realise this, but i guess not. LOOK AT THE GAME, IT OBVIOUSLY LOOKS BORDERLINE SOFTWARE-RENDERED. THEREFORE, i did some digging around in the doomconfig.cfg file, and if you scroll down like halfway, there are a series of 5 or so different settings with all 0's and NV20 set to "1"

simply change whatever renderer you wish to use (i found Standard OpenGL to be the fastest on my Radeon 9700 pro) to "1" and set all the others to 0 and VIOLA, i get 70fps.

For Example: the renderer section in my new CFG file looks like this:

seta r_useStandardGL "1"
seta r_useParhelia "0"
seta r_useNV20 "0"
seta r_useNV30 "0"
seta r_useGL2 "0"

(you might have to tinker a bit, but trust me, it works, and i suspect that even with a gf2Ultra and a 600mhz you could get like 20fps out of it on low detail when using the right rendering engine)" http://www.nvmax.com/cgi-bin/community.pl?num=1036152568

remove the lines:

I got the demo of overnet (www.overnet. com), it's all over it. But I just get it loading then a yellow screen, console thing says something about an renderer initialisation error.

If you're on dialup, you'll see that instead of telling you how long its going to take, you get something like "1D2H". This translates to 1 DAY 2 hours.

So the steps should read:
5. Overdose
6. Fall into a semi-coma
7. Sleep for 26 hours
8. Wake up, only to find you got disconnected 47 minutes into the download

To play the demo:

Go to the console:

type:

map e3/e3_1
map e3/e3_2
map e3/e3_3

That will get you to the demo levels. If you want to watch the intro type:

map intro

Fairly simple. The above info should work, that's what I had to do to get mine to work.

How do you change the res, and stuff like that. As I am getting about 2fps on my P4 2.27 Gf2 mx200 512 MB Ram.

Yes, I know my video card is seriously underpowered, but my GF4 Ti46 is not getting along with my mb as of late.

IRCool, the r_mode [n] line from my tip above is the res selector:
r_mode 3 = 640x480
r_mode 4 = 800x600
r_mode 5 = 1024x768

but remember to remove the lines:
seta r_customHeight "486"
seta r_customWidth "720"

to make a sniper scope type thing for all guns type into console:

bind mouse2 "toggle g_fov 50 90"

90 is the standard viewing angle 50 is the zoomed.

Also, "g_noreload 1" means your gun never has to reload.

Some other fun things are "pm_jumpheight" (normal for this is 48), "g_gravity" (1066 = normal).

Also when making changes to video settings in console "vid_restart" will restart the video using the new settings without having to quit the game and start again.

When I start up doom 3 everything is fine. I go to single player, than new game. It starts to load, then about 2 seconds later and error pops up saying it needs to shut down, and I should restart my computer if the problem continues. Can anyone help me out please? I have tried altering a few things in the doomconfig file, but that didn't work. This is really frustrating and I want to play this game more than anything. Has anyone else had this problem? Someone please help me!!!

Xtro, you are the shit. Finally a solid reference point to getting the alpha optimized, much props - I'm dying to get a taste of D3 but unfortunately after three days of downloading from Kazaa I try to run the damn thing and the self-extractor does not work (DOS box opens up for about 1/10 of a second, nothing happens - I wanted to scream). This should have self-extracted automatically, right?

the correct file is doom_iii.rar

try using Direct Connect, it's easy to find but you may have to search for som1 w/ a free slot
file size should be 364.09MB in direct connect

make sure you get the multifix patch as well (around 3MB), it's easy to find.

To Fat Lut:

The file is saved as a EXE, but is actually a compressed file with everything inside it. Some say it is a .rar file. Not sure. I Just opened it manually from a zip program(ie file open > select the doom_alpha > and open) and after a minute all the files showed up. Extract like normal.

I downloaded the file 364mb something from KAzza...


I extracted it .. patched it but ehen I try to load doom.exe the game crashes before I eve see anything (except from the console).......

Does anyone knows why?????

Loading maps

From the console, use the following commands:
map e3/e3_1 - 3 (Loads first to threemap)
map fred/e3bathroom5 (doesn't work for most people)

Popular commands

FPS: com_drawfps 1

Bump Mapping on/off (try switching back and forth, you'll see the changes):
r_useStandardGL 0 (this turns bump mapping ON)
r_useStandardGL 1 (this turns bump mapping OFF)

Dynamic shadows on/off (BIG performance difference):
r_shadows 1
r_shadows 0

Changing resolution:
r_mode 1 (400x300)
r_mode 2 (512x384)
r_mode 3 (640x480)
r_mode 4 (800x600)
r_mode 5 (1024x768)
r_mode 6 (1152x864)
r_mode 7 (1280x1024)
NOTE: Changing resolution will not take effect until you either restart the game, or type vid_restart

Changing bit depth:
r_colorbits 16
r_colorbits 32

Fullscreen on/off:
r_fullscreen 1
r_fullscreen 0

Mouse Sensitivity:
sensitivity X
Where X is a number between 1 and 10. The default is 5....you can actually go higher than 10, but it gets kind of ridiculous.

Invert Mouse:
m_pitch -0.022
The default setting is m_pitch 0.022, all you need to do is add the negative sign.

Third Person view:
pm_thirdperson 0
pm_thirdperson 1

Cheats / Hints
The keycode for the pad in level 2 is "924"

The codes from Q3 are still in the game at this point, but if for some reason you aren't familiar with them, here's a quick list (again, these are typed from the console):
God mode: god
Extra health: give health
Weapons: give weapon_weaponname (e.g. rocket launcher, plasmagun...some of these will crash)
Fly through walls: noclip

Look for all you people who keep getting the dos screen.
First you must download a program called WinRAR.
Once you've downloaded it next right click the doom 3 file and hit extract.
After you extract the game go to http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2002Nov/bga20021104017125.htm.

There you will get all the info on how to run and where to download etc.

you said you clicked on single player, then new game and it crashes right? Well since this is an alpha non of the menu actually works except "quit" you have to use the console for EVERYTHING. You can even quit from the console by typing quit. You must load each map from the console. hit the ~ key to pull down the console.
then type:

map e3/e3_1 for map one.
map e3/e3_2 for map 2. and
map e3/e3_3 for map 3.

Also you can play a demo of map one by typing:

playdemo activate_demo1

into the console. Also if you want to see the intro to the game type:

map e3/intro

the intro is pretty sweet although the sound is not in sinc on my machine for some reason.

Anyone else that is looking to tweak, did you know you can get grenades, the BFG, the rocket launcher, and the plasma gun in this alpha? Most are pulled from Quake and decals aren't set yet. You can also make it so that these wepons are included in the default weapons you spawn with. Also you can spawn enemies when in the game. You also can spawn the evil doctor that is shown in the intro. Working on spawing a couple of the other characters in the intro at the moment. Also if you alter some of the files you can change the speed at which your gun shoots, to change your pump shotgun to an auto possibly. If anyone wants some help with this stuff just let me know.

Thanks Xtro and Killabees13, the WinRAR worked great - that .exe extension had me messed up and the extractor I did try was useless. About the framerate issue that has spawned many questions; If it makes everyone else out there feel any better, I'm running an XP2200/Asus A7V8X/512MB 333MHz DDR RAM/Overclocked GeForce3 64MB DDR video card/RAID 0 x3 7200RPM drives and the framerate is still dropping to single digits during attacks in fullscreen mode with all the shit turned on, it gets pretty bad without cutting back on the settings or screen size. Anybody with an AGP 8X board and a Radeon 9700, please give us some scoop on the fps during battle, I'm wondering if the increased bandwidth and top card will make the alpha run that much better...

All I did was follow the 'helpful hints' at the top of this page and things got heaps better. Also I turned off the stupid XP theme and went back to Windows Classic look which saves a HEAP of ram.

After I did that, the sound in the intro movie was in synch and the framrate improved during game play. HDD lag was still a problem, especially when opening a door. But I only have 256 meg ram.

Also don't forget this is only v0.02 very early alpha code. It's amazing it runs as well as it does!

Pretty sure that all the major frame rate problems are related to loading during the action bits ,seems to be 512Mb is still not enough , if you let the enemy run around for a bit and than attack again the problem simply disappears ,pretty sure its meant to be running from ram only .I get very good frame rates on my comp xp1700/ti4200 ,certainly runs better than gta3 for example .

I got a Radeon 9700 with an a7v266-e motherboard and 512 pc2100 and a Athalon XP 2000+, and without shadows on, its as high as 65fps, but still goes to single digits when monsters attack. the shadows off help a little, and im running it at 1280x1024. i dont know if a 8x mb would help alot. but i cant wait for this game to actualy come out, looks like they just used this for the demo videos. i cant wait, this game is great! will dx9features improve performance for the r300? and im guessing the final version will render alot more effecient?

When you get a rotating ID symbol after typing "map e3/intro" just press CTRL key to
skip the logo. The logo runs around 3-5 minutes before it actually plays the intro. Hope this might
help. >:-)

so, i think that this alpha version is only fully compatible with radeon 9000 -series cards.
Does anyone know how i can get fps higher?

Anyone running a RADEON 9700 should head over to ATI's web site and download DirectX 9.0 and the newest driver for it. Iam running:
P4 2.53 on Intel D850EMV2
512 PC800
Radeon 9700
Raid 0 three Ultra ATA

I noticed a performance jump after I installed the new driver and DirectX 9.

PS.
Anyone running less than 512 Megabytes of Ram can forget about running the demo very well. I just Upgraded from 256 to 512 and the performance difference is considerable.

The instruction at "0x0068de37" referenced memory at "0x0000001a". The memeory could not be "read".

I have a AMD 2200+, 2.5GB 333Mhz DDR, MSI KT4ULTRA 8X AGP, 80bg HD with 8Mb cache, Radeon 9700 Pro 128, and the game runs crystal, im at about 82 fps with no monsters and 56 with, and thats with everything turned up... the game is kinda glichy in areas though but it is an alpha version. game looks great thanks to the guys at ID.

When i get into the game. One the first level after that be guy walks past put does not die. and i go in the door and i get a blank screen and a error saying

Got it running pretty sweet, jusy got a new comp after many an hour trying to get it to run on a p3 500 got a p4 2.6 512, GeForce 4 SE its running at about 25 - 30 fps at the mo, fiddled with the config its gonna be a classic man, if anyone knows any good configas to get it up to the 50s post a shout

if anyones finding that their system is slow after playin doom 3 them CTR+ALT+DEL and go to end process. there should be an entry for doom3(youll see it takes up a lot of space!) just end the process and your system should clear up without havin to reeboot.

I just got the alpha leak from kazaa & used winrar, it starts up great :). The problem, though, is the ID intro loops over and over, i never even get to the menu with single player, multiplayer & such (yes i know i don't need to use those). But when i hit ~ to access the console, the game IMMEDIATELY freezes & the computer has to reboot. I think this could be because i have a horribly old gfx card (ati rage 128 pro.....radeon 9700's under the tree though). Could anyone tell me how to fix this problem or is it just my card can't handle it? Thanks a lot

Hey it's me again, complete with 9700 pro now :). I wanted to say the problem evidently WAS with my card. Now the console no longer freezes and the game plays and looks spectacular. Something i found was, at least on my system, changing "standard opengl" to "1" in doomconfig makes things slightly faster, but looks HORRIBLE and all models are really blocky. I haven't seen actual numbers but i'd say it's playing on the average at about 40-65 fps. And for some reason, it hardly slows down at all when monsters attack me, except for imps.

My specs are:

1.9 Ghz P4
384 megs DDR 2100
Radeon 9700 Pro

Anyway, i'll try to play around and see what gives me the best results. TTYL guys :)

Well I finally found that .rar file! However, there's no bloody exe! All the files are there, sounds, cfgs etc, but no bloody exe. If somebody could email me just the .exe file I would be the most grateful guy EVER.

For anyone who's still looking, and like me, can't connect to eDonkey it's availible on Kazaa as a 381,000kb file, i had an avg download speed of about 15kbps, but there's one more source out there now...

u can get this file off of kazza 376 megs no exe file just 2x click on the doom icon takes u in. It will say on win rar extraction 3 files are corrupt but the demo will still work. Just copy a sound file and rename it as the corrupt one ....(you get the idea) and open the maps in the command prompt with the ~ key.

I am using a Athlon XP 1.8 with a Radeon 9700 pro and 256 mb.
I am using cacheman to help with the 256 mb limit.
Does anyone have the link for the 4 doom patches? Even in Kazaaa I can´t found it.

Hammm..forget running Doom3 on WinXP with 256 MB.
Try Using Win2000 with Cacheman enabled and proper configured.
I am preparing a cacheman profile for Doom3.

HERE IS THE ULTIMATE DOOM 3 ALPHA GUIDE WALKTHROUGH (GETTING IT AND OPTIMIZING IT)

1. DL doom_iii.rar from Kazza (could take days (Hour wise on a 56k)) this file is exactly
372,834 KB which = 372 MBS (don’t DL any other supposable doom 3 files they
could be possibly a fake doom 3 alpha)

2. DL the Doom 3 alpha fix patch called D3_Perfromance_fiX.rar
(Got it from Edonkey p2p can get it at Kazza too I think)

3. Once you unzip the doom_iii.rar, it will probably say 3 files are corrupt 1 texture file
and 2 sound files. (This happened to me) these files once unzipped the 3 bad ones will
not be unzipped so u will not have them in the doom 3 directory you unzipped all to. 1
work around is to find the 1 texture file name that was bad and go to the good files in
the doom 3 directory and copy to desktop a good one and rename it to the corrupt file
then copy it back to the proper directory. Do this to all 3 corrupt files.

4. Once the above is all done you can delete you DoomConfig file (this will be
wre-written once doom 3 is started and be kind of optimized for your system I found)

5. My system is a AMD 1800 XP (1.53 GHz) with 512 ram and a Geforce 2 Ultra with
the following
Configuration I get from 20-50 FPS.

One for ultra optimization (remember this is based off of my system hardware you may

I am amazed how well this alpha runs at such its early stage it can only get better and the graphics are definitely the price of admission coupled with the scary atmosphere and surprises on the way!!!

I sit here reading all you complain about your fps. All you have to remember first off this is an illegal copy of a game still being designed. DOOM III will be due out Christmas 2003. By that time they're will be DX10 and comps will be running GeforceFX 256, and running Pentium V 4.33 ghz with IDE 133. So my point is stop complaining about your fps at the moment the official demo should be released this summer. You should all understand this isn't an official demo its a tool for video card manufacturers like Nvidia and ATI (cough) to benchmark the game using they're new video cards and cards due to come out this year. It's also an early version of the E3 beta that was shown at E3. I'm sure some of you knew that already but this 'alpha' version is the first build for the game so don't expect much. Expect a lot at this years E3. We won't let you down...

Actually, Doom 3 is due out summer. :D

And besides, optimisation of performance for the consumer hasn't even been started yet, so if you manage to get Doom 3 running at all, it should be running even better when it's released. That's what i heard anyway.

Well I sit here and read the above threads and find out what i thought all along has been always true. Its all in the programming. What i mean is if the code is worked enough ie good programers and its in their intrest they can make a game like doom 3 run on a 1 gig machine basic 64 mb card and 512 ram get 60+ FPS if it is in thier intrest! But of course it isnt other companies i bet are in a sort of kahoots (sorry spelling :P) with the software companies for example Intel or Nvidia are pushing a nivida FX 256 card soon or whatever card they give perks money etc. to software companies if they make the game run good on a certian level of card and processor example unreal tourney 2k3 runs optimumly and perfers nvida video cards like in the intro (you know what i mean) so my point is really if the software companies out there want a program to run smooth and good on a basic 1 gig system they can.

I tried to use the directions i found at http://doomiii.tv/ and they seem to work, but after about a minute of the game loading there is a program error which states "doom.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. you will need to restart the program". I used Kazaa to get the file i used, but im wondering if there is anywhere else I might be able to obtain this file again? also, any ideas on why this error may have occured?

Hello boys. Plain and simple :

Extracted .rar file from KaZaa.
Copied new performance files.
Clicked on DOOM icon to load game.
A blue console type thing appeared, it scrolled down a list of instructions.. it completed.
Goes to a black screen.. goes to a grey screen. Stays at the grey screen.
Forever.
No intro, no menu.

What in the name of good gamers everywhere am I doing wrong ? That is all.

For everyone having trouble with the Doom III alpha...

You need to get the Doom III alpha, its easiest to get it off EDonkey or Kazaa. It will be the one that is about 370 MB. When you get that flash of a DOS prompt, you need to get a WINRAR extracter. http://www.winrar.com (duh.)

Extract the files into the directory you want to play the game from. Start the game, when the id opening starts do not skip it!

Instead...
Hit ~ on your keyboard to bring up the cmnd prompt
The following commands bring up levels:
map e3/e3_1 (map 1)
map e3/e3_2 (map 2)
map e3/e3_3 (map 3)
map e3/intro (intro video shown at e3 by carmack)

The game will have some compatibility issues of course, because it isnt meant to be in the hands of consumers yet. DoomLord, if you are having trouble, try deleting the doomconfig file.

This is a trixsy business, playing Alphas. Hope you guys have a beast of a system. Expect slowdown no matter what you are running this monster on.

ok I have got that Doom 3 Alfa game and I have been playing it on my system.
I have a:
Pentium 4 1.8GHz
256MB DDR Ram
Ge-Force ti 200
Sound Blaster 5.1 Live
DVD-Rom
Win XP Pro.

I can run the game just fine. but at times the FPS drop alot.

I here people on here talking about a patch for the game or some thing that makes the game run a little better. Where do I get this patch or what ever it is called? people say kazaa. Ok cool, but what do I type in to search for it???

OK U GUYS GOT DOOM 3 ALPHA TO WORK HERES HOW U DO IT.

Multiplayer
FIRST OFF!!! THIS IS AN ALPHA, AND THERE ARE MANY MANY MANY UNFINISHED PARTS!!! THIS INCLUDES THE MULTIPLAYER, SO THERE ARE MANY MANY MANY LIMITATIONS!!!

First off, before you are told how to play multiplayer, here are some of the limitations:

1) Only the Pistol works, using any other weapon, kills the client connection.

2) Player animations are NOT finished!!! So the players look funny walking around the rooms "stiff"

3) None of the E3_x maps have Deathmatch starting points by default, So you will need to edit them,
or download pre-edited maps, and add them into your base/maps/ directory accordingly.

4) IF there are any mosters on the level, there is a very good chance when they attack one
of the players, and or kill one (or are killed) It will kick off the client connection.
This means, you will also have to have an edited map that includes no monsters!

5) So If you are playing an edited map, BOTH PLAYED MUST HAVE THE SAME REVISION MAP!

6) If the client player kills the host player, it will usually end the server connection,
This means GAME OVER, time to start a new server, and reconnect!


OK, now that you know the limitations, here is how to start a server, conenct to the server
and some techinfo & notes. keep in mind THIS WILL WORK BEST ON A LAN!

To be (start) a server, bring down the console, and type:
"spawnserver mapname" //(ie. "spawnserver empty")

next, goto the client computer, and type:
"connect computername" //("connect windows_computer_name")

Now, this will work fine for the LAN, but if you want to connect over the internet,
it gets allot more tricky. SINCE THIS IS AN ALPHA, the connect command does not recognize
ip addresses as a valid parameter. BUT, there are ways around this. ;)
1) Make sure the computer you are connecting to has a internet DNS name, and then type:
"connect mydomain.com"

2) Second methed, edit your local windows hosts file to point to the ipaddress of the DooM ]|[ server.
To edit Your windows hosts file type the following line in the "Start -> Run" command:
notepad %windir%system32driversetchosts

at the bottom of this file, you will see the following line:
127.0.0.1 localhost

You will need to add a line below that one telling the computer where the DooM ]|[ server is,
something like this:
123.123.123.123 doom3server

Except, you would use the real ip address of the server you are going to connect to.
Now, from the client computers doom console you would type:
"connect doom3server"

Thats it! you should be connecting!!!
However, if you have a firewall router setep, you will need to open the following ports:
27973 UDP
27974 UDP


NOW ON TO A WORKING MULTIPLAYER MAP!!!
if you have the jk_v01_e3_2.zip edited e3_2 map file, extract the e3_2.map file into your
"doom_iii/base/maps/e3" directory.
BEFORE YOU DO THIS BACKUP THE EXISTING E3_2.MAP FILE!!!!!

SOME NOTES ON THIS MAP:
It has had all the monsters taken out!
It has had 2 Deathmatch starting points added into it!

It has a few issues when you are playing it:
1) The cutscene is still there, so the first time a player walks over the trigger,
both players will have to watch the cutscene.
2) The door is locked, so one player will have to unlock it for the other player,
after that its DeathMatch TIME!!! (the Doorkey is 9-2-4 if you didn't already know)

good version, not corrupted all I had to do was uncompress it with WinRar and play, sounds mad in surround but appears to have a horrible memory leak, gets slower the more I use it. What does chacheman do and where can I get it.

DOn't worry, it should run ok - my system is a P4 1Ghz 256 RDRAM and Geforce 4 MX (all of which I plan to upgrade in time for Doom 3). Just gotta optimise it by following the instructions given and advice from everyone here.

I beleive the intro somtimes doesn't work properly with sound on some machines. I'm not sure how to fix this, but it works alright on my machine (albeit a bit out of sync).

I've been working on changing the controls to that of generic Half life and the F1-F7 keys spwn monsters (some may not work) including the evil scientist from the intro, he wont do anything but is "alive" and solid until he is shot ehough to "die" and you can walk through him.

Just some info for people that try unraring the kazaa exe file of doom3 (about 372833mb?). If you have an older version of winrar... it won't work. You need the newest ver. of it or else you will get a crapload of errors from it trying to extract it ;). My friend had this problem and I had to smack him around a bit ;D cheers*

Silverskin: It sounds like a problem with your videocard. Update the drivers by looking for the card type and manufacturer and downloading the appropiate ones (in case you didn't know how). If it stil occurs, it must be a config file problem or your video card is not strong enough to handle Doom 3. What video card do you have?

I updated my driver and it has improved some things, like now I can render multi textures when I used to get an error.

But I still can't run Doom3. Oh well, not a great surprize really, my specs aren't great: P3 1GHz, 384MB RAM and a.... er..... 16MB on board graphics card.

I was hoping to maybe run the game very slowly, but it wasn't to be. Thanks for the help anyway.

Off course you can play the game with anyother card.. but the visual will not be impressive!
Forget using StandardGl.. use Nv20 por Radeon 9700 PRO to get the best graphics!(the performance too).
I am using Sued´s cacheman scripts for a 256DDR system. Oahmmmmm the games run preatty good.
Even with a 512MB DDR system you WIL NOT HAVE THE CLICHES that the game demonstrate in this alpha Version. This game is not tweaked to use segmentend memory footprint. you must do this by 3rd party programs.

Fred: wtf? It should look amasing and play FINE with Geforce 3 and above. Hell, with a gEforce 2, if you have a good enough system, should be able to run Doom 3 at a playable rate (coming from experience). Anything below 32MB will not run the game.

OK, judging from innumerous plays, and other people's accounts on loads of forums, I've devised a minimum spec list for the alpha. These are the minimum to play this alpha at a reasonable rate.

1 Ghz Pentium 4/Athlon (1.4 or better preferred)
128MB RAM (256 or better preferred)
32MB Video Card (OpenGL support) (128MB GeForce 4/Radeon 9700 preferred)

I hate to sound like a brocken record or a nagger here but here is the definitive summary of D3 and you. You get it from Kazza and patch it or from

as an uncorrupted version. If you machine has not got a cpu above 1Gh and you dont have a Radeon9700 then you will have to get the "lower my graphics please" patch. If youre machine kicks ass in the cpu or gpu area then you can run at a good speed. Play around expect about 20-30fps in an empty room to 2fps in combat, think how wonderfull this is as you shouldnt have this yet and dont complain.

Well i have read about all of these postes and it seems that i have the worse problem i unzip with winRAR.
This goes perfect i go to open my prize and joy(DOOM III) and the opengl console runs you know just before the game(example quake, wolfenstein, SOF2 and so on...) than an error pops up before the game even starts saying:

Than i throught delete the "DoomConfig.cfg" to start it new but all what happens is a grey window fills the screen and you hear a error message which says the same:

OK, i finally got this mofo working right, but now i have HORRIBLE FPS. Whenever shooting, i average about 2 fps, other wise i average about 6 or 7 fps. Adam: Looks like yo're processor is a bit out of date - try and upgrade to an Athlon XP or Pentium 4. For this you'll need a new motherboard don't forget as they both use a different socket to the Pentium 3. Do that and Doom should run cricles around your desktop.

Hey guys i just thought id give u a cool tip. If you are sick of always typing the in map e3/e3_1 or whatever map name u wanna play, make a shortcut of doom3.exe and then right click on the shortcut and in the target line simply add map e3/xx (where x is the name of the map) eg:

the line now would be c:\path to your doom3.exe map e3/e3_1.

I have made 4 shortcuts. 3 for each map and 1 for the intro. U never know it might actually get passed that damn error.

I just got this baby up and running. My system is P3 1GHz, 384 SDRam, GeForce2 MX 400 64 MB SDRam. From the beginning of the demo on e3_1 I get about 6-7 fps with all details on. The first thing I do is turn off Dynamic Lighting, and boom 15-20 fps. it drops to like 6-7 fps when something starts attacking, but after the initial attack frames go back up to 15-20, while the attack is happening. I havent played to far into it yet, cause it scares the shit outta me. But I was wondering bout the patch, what kinda stuff does it do?

i think the key is directx9 (which i haven't installed since I reloadd windows..) and possibly futzing with shadows and lighting...but its the lighting that makes it so creepy @_@ I can't wait to buy this game...but yeah, since they haven't optimized it tahts why it runs like ass...but for version 0.02 its excellent and gives me high hopes for the final version..

No prons roll, i live to serve :P, i havent spent much time fideling with D3, back to school and HSC and all :*(

BTW: it seems on my comp anyway, that D3 has a memory leak, that is it dosn't wipe system memory after it uses it which means it gets slower the longer I play it. This is a long time with 512mb DDR 336ram (yay) but if you only have 128, dont expect to be playing for hours.

When you download the doom 3 alpha off Kazaa it should be about 120 megs. It is a RAR FILE. Get winrar and open the actual winrar program, find the doom 3 alpha program that you downloaded and tell it to extract that file. That was the way I got it to extract.

I have a question, after shooting and killing a few zombies the framerate drops drastically and strange graphical anomilies start showing up on the screen. The performance drop is accompanied by a message that says "vertex cache overflow". I have 256 megs of ram, is that the problem? Most people now have 512, but I always thought 256 was pretty big. I am running a geforce 2 mx 400, its pretty dated so I was surprised how well it ran the game, but after shooting a few zombies the above happens. The weak link is probably your video card, after killing some zombies (messily) there is blood splattered alllllll over the walls ( :) ) and youre GPU is probably struggeling to calculate blood vectors and render them all in realtime, have you tried lowering youre graphics setttings, heres how you do it,

go into doom folder and find doom config, open it using word pad and find these phrases

thanks but I have done those things, and alot of other things to make the game look like crap, but the blood is still there, the decals are still there, and the game just doesnt clear it from the memory. I was wondering if you could turn decals (bullet holes) off? Sure there would be no blood but I wanna play the damn game at a reasonable framerate!

Does anyone else just get the grey screen of death??
Installed all the files with the patch/config etc.
Click on the .EXE and I see the blue loading box then the screen goes black then grey and stays like that. If I wait a while and type in the map command I can hear the game running but still only have grey screen to look at :(

I'm running the following:
AMD 2100xp
Nvidia ti4400 (4286 drivers)
512ram
Win XP Pro SP1 DX9.

I recently managed to downlaod and get doom3 working thanks to you guys on this page.

I however keep encountering a bug when a door opens on the first level.

Its the second door you walk through but as soon as i open it the sreen goes black and it complains about demo not recording.

the annoying thing is that the game is still running but all i can see is a nice black screen.

any suggestions on how to fix this ?

Hey guys, I got the doom 3 demo working.
Downloaded off of kazaa, and got the winrar extracter program. Worked fine, once I found out you have to use the consol to get into the game.

I have an athlonxp 2100 overclocked to 2400 with 512MB ddram overclocked to almost 400mhz thanks to the new nvida8x agp board!
I have an geforceTI4200 128mb 8xagp (leadtek, best overclocking brand IMO).

WIth this monster setup the game gets about 23 fps on the first level I play. Very little slowdown even in fights. BUT ONLY FOR THE FIRST LEVEL. once I load up a new map, or spawn too many ragdoll fat zombies :) the game loses the fps BIG TIME. like the game does not clean the ram out at all, or somthing...
Still. WHAT AN IMPRESSIVE GAME!! WOW! It was worth it to see alone. I am very impressed with the light sourcing. Just amazing work! I will definatley buy this game when it comes out, cause I know with the bugs worked out, It will play at 35+ fps on my current system.I AM SURE OF THAT. I remember the q3 alpha demo too.. It was the same way. Played with low fps when fighting. But when the full version came out, 60 fps no probs on a lil 300mhz system!
I know I could tinker with d3 to get more out of it but why.? I already like what I see and am just waiting to buy!
My fav thing was spawning ragdoll zombies and pileing up the bodies!! I can't belive how realistic it is! THE ARMS/LEGS WRAP ON AND AROUND NOT THROUGH OTHER OBJECTS!!!! Cool! I stacked like 5 bodies untill the game got too low fps!
I CAN NOT WAIT TO PLAY DEATHMATCH AND HAVE PILES OF MY VICTEMS ADDING UP!!! :)
The real disapointment I had with this illeagal alpha lead was the violence.. THE full version BETTER have gore effects not just blood and pain skins.. Yes it is the best blood ever, but I wanted to blow zombies into pieces!.. I am sure the full version will be more than I bargained for in violence! :)

Hopefully some smart programmer with spare time will make some good nonofficail mods\patches for this demo to enhance the experience, since it will be a long time before the real deal is out. :(

But unreal 2 is out tommorow and though not as good graphically, I think it is the better game. Sure doom is fun and all, but unreal just sounds like more fun.!

Even my script can´t help you because you are running GeforceMX.. (the graphic processing power is lower then geforce2TI top model).
Well. my script only works with win98 and win2k..
winXP EATES a lot of memory even disabling all the beautifull graphic functions.

If you have a card different than Radeon 8500,870p ro..geforce 4ti 1278MB.. try disable dimanic shadows..

Hey guys, I know I said I would not tinker with it more, but I got bored.. I don't know what option exactly it was that did this but--
I got the game running over 60fps in small enclosed areas!! And when fighting zombies I got over 30. But once again, I spawned too many rag dolls and my frames toumbled when it could not compute the data of all the bodies!
I wish I could post the sceen shot I took! I PILED AT LEAST 2 DOZEN BODIES in the 2nd level! What a gross but amazing site!

I had trouble getting the sound to work right... I have to switch it back and forth from windowed mode to fullscreen and restart whenever I want to play with sound.

GO BUY UNREAL 2 YA BUMS! :)

a lot of you don't know what you are talking about. this game is EXTREMELY cpu limited. without a fsb speed of 133 or 166 (266 and 333 respectively) you will not be happy with your performance regardless of your video card. athlons running on the 200 mhz fsb just will not run this game comfortably. if you want to play this game you need to upgrade.

I just noticed that in the cvars list there is a line that says: "g_skill 1" I am not sure if this is designating the difficulty level or not, or if difficulty levels are even implemented yet. If it makes a difference some of you hardcore gamers may have a blast by cranking the skill number up.

I also just noticed that you can lower the screen size of the game just like in the original doom! This created incredible results on my machine. Nearly a 10 fps difference when I lowered it once! Type in the console: sizeup, or: sizedown. The only problem here is that it puts the screen in the bottom corner and in the rest of the space you have what the screen looked like originally pasted there. if only we could figure out a way to make the empty space black and put the screen in the middle.

TO answer sniperguys question- yes you can take screen shots, but you have to bind a key to do it. Easy. I got many great pics!
And anyone who turns off the light sourcing to improve fps, is missing out on the best part of this game IMO. This demo is more fun to look at, then play. It is truely a site to behold!
As far as underperforming goes- You could have the absolute latest and greatest and your pc will still play this demo poorly. NOT becuase the game is that power demanding, but because it is alpha code. IMO, it is amazing it plays as well as it does considering this was only built to be a demo at E3!

Unreal 2 sucks? I don't mind if it is buggy. I am in it for the editor... :) and there will always be patches! Remember tribes 2 when it first came out? Played like crap, little time later, and a few patches, boom! Smooth as silk.
How was the violence in U2 by the way? I would buy it, but it is not in stores yet, in my area.. :(

Gamebro.. I am running UNREAL2 with FULL Graphics.. and I DIDN´T LIKE ALL THE MONSTER STUFF.. only AIDA the girl from Atlantis SHips and the mechanics guy is worth to see.

Unrealsuck- You make some good points.. I never liked the monsters in unreal 1 so I don't think they will be much better now. Stupid skarri were the most annoying creature to fight, and the most common. Human oppenents would have been much more interesting.
But this game will still be fun for mappers like me! Heck, I thought the single player mode of unreal 1 sucked big time! But using the editor I added many nalis and other goodies to make it more enjoyable. gota love blowing up them guys! :)

Look.. the technology is amazing(there some nice effects that Unreal2003 doesn´t have)...
But take some exemple:
If god gives power to an idiot(Legend) ...this idiot will do some piece of trash with good lights and shadows.
This is Unreal2.

The worst thing for me is Monster Modeling.
THERE AREN´T ANY RAGDOLL(Phisics) efects on the creatures.. I couldn´t belive.....
When you fire at some dead corpses.. humm. NO BLOOD..NO MOVE.
Look.. the game is only work to see in some firends house.. to see some nice enviroment..(there is an leve that a Couldn´t remenber that are amazing.. but only that).
The monsters AI are MONSTROUS.. COMPLETE diferent than Unreal2003. Unreal2003 is very polished.. good look graphics in every step on the game.
AGAIN..Unreal2 enginne is amazing.. (REALLY NICE REFLECTIVE EFFECTS.>AND SHADOWS(not as good as doom3..off course.. this is why doom3 is special)..I went to the InfoGames forum..to see what legends development are saying abou all the complains..THEY ARE PREATY DEAD...
The next patch will increase player movement that is not suficient to avoid fire...
I am guilt.. I BOUGHT THE FUCKING GAME.. HERE IN BRAZIL FOR $60!!!!!! :(

I hope Doom3 won´t disapointed me..
I have 26 year.. I saw Wolfeinstein.. Doom... tha so on... (I was once a gamer programer..but I gave Up to work with financial programer.. SUCKS).
I am doiing some hacking into doom3.exe.. but it will take a long...(I can´t remever all the fucking assember OP codes).

K, I had the same problem, when I started the game, all I would get is a blinking grey screen at full screen, and in windowed mode, it was just simply a grey screen.. I fixed this problem, by going here http://developer.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=nv30_emulation and downloading the nvemulate.exe running that little program, clicking checkmark next to the first box, then clicking apply. Everything ran well, however, this is my computer

amd 1800 xp
gf4 mx 440
382 mb ddr ram
windows xp
40 gig 7200 rpm hdd
42.01 nvidia driver
directX version 9 the beta one.

Now, the really weird part is that, if you know tribes 2, I get 160 fps average in this game, in quake I would imagine I would get 250 fps, in sof2 I get 125 fps, I simply can ran anygame flawlessly, at high graphics with really high fps.. Now, while playing the game doom 3, I get around 1 fps every 5-6 seconds?? I mean wtf, I even optimized my doomconfig.cfg file, and still I get 1 fps every 5-6 seconds??

I am trying to figure out what the problem is, that it keeps doing this? I figured, a reason why these problems are being caused, is maybe because I get warning error msgs after typing in map e3/e3_1 _2, or _3. For example, the first msg for first map is
Warning: Maps /e3/e3_1.aas96 is out of date.
1 warnings

Now for the 2nd map, I get warning: rigid body for entity etc...

I as well get a similer error for 3rd map.. I have yet to figure out why the hell does it say this? I know I should run this game atleast at 50 fps at lower detail settings, yet it's not doing this.. I remember running this game some time ago with only 128 mb ddr ram, slower computer at 10 fps, and this newer computer which is much better, runs at far worse performance??

IF anybody else here is having these difficulties, and finds a way to fix them, please post your reply in here, if any of us have helped you, especialy me, please you owe us this one.. We all should help eachother out, so post if you know anything that can help any of us out, thanks peace out. I'll be back, if I found out the solution to the problem myself.

well guys, I think I have given up. Without putting the resolution down to 400 by 300, I turned down everything so that it looks like TOTAL CRAP. The only reason that creates these huge ass slow downs I think is the excelent blood effects. I think every blood splatter on the wall is created randomly so it looks super realistic. Now these blood effects have to take into consideration the area around the point of impact and splatter the blood around that area in a (I think) random fasion. If this is so, no wonder everyone gets hella slow downs after killin a bunch of zombies. The computer stores all the blood effects in its ram which eats up resources.

Ever use the machinegun and just load a dead body with bullets? You can see it get slower and slower from all the blood flying around. Now, if some guy out there could create a patch for this thing that might conserve resources better, i would get it because I have a dated video card and all the blood splattering around wont help.

Normally i get around 20fps when walking around, and when I start shooting a zombies it fluctuates between 0-15 fps. Keep in mind that this is with just about everything turned off, shadows, normal gl is turned on, you name it I got it turned to its highest performance setting.

Now I have to admit that it runs hella good for alpha code, and by the way it was only made for ID's super computers.

SOMEBODY MAKE A PATCH FOR THIS THING THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!

you guys ever try turning the sound off? I cant beleive how much of a fps jump it makes. Like when it was on it was pretty much unplayable, but when I turn it off it runs like friggen lightning (for my specs anyway) anyway to lower the quality of the sound so I can get a better fps?

ack, I am kinda tired of optimizing. I just gotta get myself a new geforce 4 ti 4400! Then the game will run perfectly, and when the actual game comes out, no problem, just run it as usual and get astonishing frame rates. The geforce 4 ti 4400 is running at about 130 bucks, so if I cant get that, god help me and just hope it comes out for the xbox.

The Geforce 4 is the most opoular card out there, and while the R300 chipset cards are more powerful, there isn't much else that could beat the GF4 in terms of power and price. It's relatively cheap (for graphics cards) and packs a mean punch. So no, it doesn't suck. Even the MX version can still hold out on it's own. Now, if you have a R300 chipsset like the Radeon 9700 pro, then good for you, you have the best on the market. But GF4 is STILL very powerful, and is about $100 cheaper.

i get ~20fps without monsters and ~7-10fps with monsters at 1280x1024 :)

Kage, GF4 is only popular cause the mainstream market is 15 yr old idiots such as yourself that think Nvidia is the best brand of card you can get.

Firstly, GF4 MX is basicly just a overclocked, slightly modifyed GF2 designed to suck in the low end market and get rid of left over chips- dont try and tell me differnt, its a FACT.

Radeon 9700 and GF4 Ti4600 are around the same price, depending on which brand, some are cheaper some are the same some are more expensive.
But can you run the most graphicaly intensive games with full AA and full FSAA without a major slowdown on a Ti4600? Nup. Thier FSAA technology sucks just like thier cards.
In fact, r300 hasnt even reached its true potential yet because ATI still havnt masted the drivers (nvidia have had years to work on thier drivers).

Just take a look at Nvidia's "next generation" GF FX, Radeon 9700 is outperforming it in some cases and at the most its only gaining a 3%-10% speed increase, and Radeon 9700 STILL beats it at FSAA. Its being canned at 100,000 cards and Nvidia is going back to the drawing board.
They are shitting themselves now because ATI's new line of cards is going to BLOW THEM AWAY, and they know it.

Nvidia has only slowed down the potential of GFX card technology, it should be much better now than it currently is.

3DFX's Voodoo4/5 had the potential to beat a GF3 back in its time, but 3dfx never got the chance to make good drivers.

Right now, nvidia is still going to lead the market, but unless they steal ATI's technology or hit a breakthrough they are in serious trouble.

Anyways, ive had my rant.

well I have an nvidia geforce2 mx, and it runs without a hitch. I am NOT going to spend 300 dollars for a new radeon just to upgrade 2 years later. While radeon has quite alot of technological merits, it is not worth the extra hundred bucks.

Excuse me, but when did I say that the GF4 is the best card on the market? Hell, I said that the R300 chipset was the best. I was saying that the GF4 DOESN'T suck, and is great value for such a low price. And yes, the R300 range does tend to cost around £50 MORE than the GF4 range. I was opnly triny gto say the GF4 was good, not that it was the best.

And Ralphy, while I know the GF4 MX is just a GF2 on sterioids, I HAVE ONE because it was the only one I could afford (second hand for £40), and it runs extremely well. Ivan- I downloaded my doom off of kazaa too.. I had an error like yours while using winrar to extract it.
I Just ignored the errors, and it worked fine. I never used any fixes, and it worked fine. Not sure if I hade the same errors, but it sounds familular.?..

GeforceTI4200 128mb is what I am using.. AND IT DOES NOT SUCK! :(
I had a radeon 9500 64mb, and It was fine for most new games... BUT it could not play old games worth a crap! Very poor support for most older games! Now my G4 plays almost anything, so how can it suck? At least it plays the games I like to play!
Even in morrowind the textures where all screwy! MY D@MN SOUND WAS EVEN SCREWED UP in many games because of the ati card-- Even games that did not use 3d graphics like heros 2 had no music.. As soon as I put in the g4, abracadabra! No problems.
The new ati cards are good, but if you like to play new AND old games, I'd stay away from the ATI brand. But if you don't care about the classic games, then go with an ATI card ( just not the 9500! :(
I have actually used both brands so I know what I am talking about. Nvadia has been in this game longer, and is more popular, therefore has the support to back it. Nvadia put 3dfx out of biz, and I am sure it will happen to ati as well. I am glad that ATI has kicked nvadia in the ass for slacking off though! This should wake em up!

PS- don't waste your money on a new card now just to play doom3 2 fps faster. It is not worth it.!! Save your money and use the good card you have already. Otherwise you will kick yourself when the $300 card you want now is only $150 5 months from now!

I play old games just fine on my 9700, like action quake2/counter-strike/tribes2, aswell as new ones like Unreal2 that im playing now.

Never had one problem with it, no sound problems like you said and i have played the new morrowind expansion and it looks perfect.

My guess is that the card had some kinda incompatability with your motherboard or something.

I think it will be a great new game when it comes out. But people looking for the action packed kill fest that the old dooms were, will be dissapointed by the slower pace of this new doom. ya, I know, it is not done yet. But I can tell what kind of game it is going to be by this demo.. This is more of a survival horror game then an action game. All flash and no play. I am not dissapointed with the technoligy or graphics.. And I know the full version will be much better, but the gameplay is just soo soo.. I am running a 1.4 GIG P4, GF4TI4200, AUDIGY 2. Any ideas? The game runs half decent, just this damn error makes some parts unplayable.

Yes. I am sure the hardcore doom fans will not like the single player much. I still think doom 3 will be a great multiplayer game though. As long as you can pile your victems up! :)

Any of you guys ever use the doom legacy program? It rocks! You can play any of the old dooms with GL graphics in high res! Plus many other enhancements that make it feel and look like a newer game than it is! I highly reccomend DOOM LEGACY to the true doom fans.! Me n my lil bro lan the old dooms quite often! Coop rules!

hey curtis I get the same error after awhile, it depends alot on your system ram, which you didn't state. Apparently it doesnt clear the blood out of the system memory correctly and the incredibly real blood effects just sit in the ram and eat up the resources. I got 512 but you should probably have at least a gig of it for it to work optimally. Keep in mind that this is an ALPHA and the real game wont need nearly as much power as this demo does, it isnt optimized yet.

and guys, people who think doom 3 is gonna suck because it is too slow should just shut up because we are not in the old arcadey "shoot everything that moves" gaming world anymore. The storylines are a whole lot (whole lot!) better written and they always change throughout the game. Old games like doom rock, but I get tired of the sole objective of the game being: run, shoot, gather ammo and health, repeat. I want a twist in the storyline and when I play old games like doom I feel like there is something missing. I hope doom 3 will fill in this empty space of storyline.

hey paradox, when you shoot that many bullets at a zombie blood gets splattered everywhere and it eats up system resource. Technacally, 60 shots means 60 bloodstains all over the walls. The blood looks great and because of that eats up system resources. There is no "fix" because thats just what happens. I hope ID optimizes the blood effects so they aren't so staggering to the performance. (usually performace drops are related to rendering all the blood on the walls.)

Hunter- I don't mean doom 3 will suck... And yes. Many people like you who are bored of action will enjoy a change.. But for the doom fans who liked the action and want more, they "will" be disapointed....
Personally, I don't care too much for most of the action games out there, as most action games are not fun to play period.. But I would rather D3 stay true to its' roots and be an action game.. NOT A MOVIE that gets old the first time you see it.... Why not just call this game- Resident Doom??? :)

All the good shooters are the slower ones these days. And I loved System Shock 2!! I would be very happy if ID would make doom 3 with RPG elements, or somthing that seperates this game from the rest, other than just having better graphics.. AND WILL THESE GRAPHICS STILL BE AWESOME NEXT CHRISTMAS??? By the time it gets out, we might have some other game that is graphically, about as good..
I am glad to see the doom 3 engine.. Not for doom3,, but for other games that may be developed with it that will be better than d3! SS3 anyone?

I didn't even think i had a chance to run doom, but i get pretty a prety good 20fps(3fps with more than three guys on screen at once). The only thing i can't do is run the intro. I type "map e3/intro" and it loads for twenty seconds, then it says that doom 3 has caused an error and needs to restart. All the other three levels and the bathroom5 work fine. My computer is the following:

I think ID was aiming for a scarier type of game than anything else. It is quite rare these days for a game to scare the crap out of you, and this demo really scares the shit outta me! All the sounds in the background, a groan, and then a zombie comes out from a dark corner! PTFFFSH! This game has the most realistic violence I have ever seen. The blood looks like it is actually splatterring all over the walls. Also I hope they take out cutscenes because I wanna see the game for myself, not have a camera show it to me. I think that is a little bit too movie-ish. I want it to be the same feel as half-life.

Hunter: While Half-Life was genuinly atmospheric because of the fact that there wee no cutscenes, it was still a tad limited in what it could do to the player. I mean, look at Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill 2 and other games using cut-scenes, it can still create a great atmosphere. And I don't even care if it does use them or not, as long as Trent Reznor's doing the sound, it would scare the shit out of everyone who played it, cutscenes or not! :D

well, I never did like cutscenes mainly because it made you feel like you weren't there. Metal gear solid was a third-person game, so the inclusion of a cutscene would not change the feel of the game at all seeing as you are always out of your own body anyway. On doom 3, however, cutscenes would disturb the immersion and quote: "remove the feeling of helplessnes" I still hope they drop the idea of cutscenes because I want to have the experiance of actually being there. Again, I relate to half-life, and I want it to feel that way.

also, cutscenes in a first person shooter should be removed entirely if you want the player to be immersed in story-driven scenes. I find myself losing interest in a cutscene in a first person shooter, rather, when there is no cutscene, I listen a lot harder because (for the hundreth time) I feel that I am really there. Being able to move and look freely makes you feel like you are there, and it doesn't go against the rules of writing, which are: don't tell the reader, show them. An example would be: I was scared, could be changed to, my heart was beating so hard I could feel it, and my eyes searched the rooms for anything that could be dangerous. Obviosly, the second passage sounds a lot better than the first. In my opinion, eliminating cut-scenes would gurantee that the player would be more immersed.

First off, thanks for all the help from everyone in this huge ass thread! So I might as well throw my problem in and make it a little longer: I'm getting the stupid grey screen on load as others have experienced, the only difference is that I had it up and running fine yesterday on my 9500 Pro, then I updated the drivers and, bam, there it is. I know I can go ahead and revert back to the old driver but I thought I'd put this out there and see if anyone would know why this new driver might cause this or have experienced it themselves. Now.. I exchange Win2k for WinXP and the dawmed operacional system eates a lot of Ram. I will buy another 256 RAM module.

Well hello everyone. I would first like to thank all of you kind folks who have posted questions and answers. It has helped me out tremendiously to find the answers to all of the questions I have been haveing. Glad to say I finaly have the game up and running and it is beutiful. Absolutely gorgious. And to think, the last game this comapny made was RTCW. The step in quality is simply breathtaking!

But enough ranting. I was curious:
I know the postings tell me that "map fred/e3bathroom5" doesn't work for MOST people.

Well who does it work for?!

It just seems as though: If we all have the same files, and we all have roughly similar systems, that it should either work for most everyone or not work at all.

If anyone has been able to access this map, please tell me what is on your computer that's not on mine. Or at least tell me what I'm missing so I can continue to drool over myself until the reliease of the game.

I have the same problem.
doom starts showing its blue status window just with 1 line in it (doom3.v02 win-x86 bla bla) ''working'' few secs
then rfc radiant app. has encountered serious error....

ok i tried it with dx8, dx9, normal doom.exe, no intro fixed.exe (which loads a bit longer) , but nothings working!!!

also tried some config changes, nv30 emulation but i don't think there is any game engine already loaded in this stage.

Problem is i'm still using a p2 350 with gf2 mx400 and 256mb ram. YES you read right! should be fucking slow for the alpha, but i just wanted to test it, but i think problem is that doom doesn't support the p2, so everybody who else has same problem like me, maybe its because of processor.

i really got it now, its problem with p2 which doesn'T support movntq instruction, so i patched the .exe file using movq instead.
NOW IT WORKS! dunno if amd k6 is also infected, so everybody who's interrested to get doom3 running on their p2/celeron whatever and wanna see why to buy a new computer just send me mail

to turn off sound simply type this into the console: s_noupdates

since the sound needs to be restarted you need to type this in right after that:

s_restart

I have some great info about Doom III.
WindowsXP have some problem with sound processing in Doom3.. so.. the intro. and some sounds in the game can behave havoc some time.
The fix? Go to win2k and this problem simply disapears!!!!!!!!!!! LOOK. I have tested this tip with my friends computers..with windowsXP and Win2k.
LOOK. ALL SYSTEM WITH 512 RAM DDR 333.

I have also done ALL the available tweaks on windowxxp.;. but nothing happend!

I know.. formating the harddisk is some time boring. but I notice best performance with Windows2000. not only in Doom3.. also in Unreal2.. NeverWinter Nighs...

Yo....predator....the alpha demo may play but it will be slow as shit...mines kinda slow and we have similar systems.....i have a better graphics card....thats why i say it will play but be slow.....i did a lot of research and it seems to me that if your comp can even get image quality from the demo...meaning you see all the shit....you should be 100 percent golden to run the final product as it will have stuff added to it so it plays on "lower end comps"......i guess the better it plays now(the alpha) the better you should have it(all eye candy on ect...) when the final product comes out. tripp if you don't know what your doing you better as hell not do it. Flashing your bios with the wrong bios driver is a HUGE no-no, it can make your computer stop fuctioning or worse. If you do know what your doing, well, then give it a try. Overclocking voids the warrenty and you might have to put more cooling components on the card.

from what I heard the thing that will give you the most performance increase is to overclock your front side bus (fsb). I heard that doom 3 is very fsb dependant for a good, smooth framerate.

I have downloadet Doom III Alpha Lead from KazaA a weeks long every night with my slow 56k Modem. But I have a big Problem!!! It's a rar-File, and I don't know what to do with it!!! If you download the file from Kazza and all you got wuz the Base folder and no exe file. Repair the archive (file) with RAR and then extract the repaired archive. It worked for me

Its been awhile since i last posted......hey hunter...i uh....flashed my saphire non pro(9700) with pro bios and it starts up at pro speeds...3d mark went up 2000 points! I overclocked the shit out of it and i also took off the sham...its a metal peice under the heatsink....im clocked at about 350 core/324 memory....and i overclocked my front side bus and memory.....and MAN do i see a HUGE difference in game play....its really like nite and day.....it plays really smooth...and thats with no patches...ill try those tonight. I went from 36 fps max(before i tweaked card and system) to 69-75 fps max stable after tweak. So...i recomend all the people in hear that are struggling with the demo to (BE VERY CAREFUL!!!) tweak there graphic cards...overclock alittle...and overclock front side bus and memory.

well, i have the game installed, i've messed with the config and such, but I havea problem i havn't found on any other message boards...

when i load a map, it'll load, then i'll hear some ambient noises, but the screen is black, and I get an error saying

Hey aman, itl work great on that, you should have the full experience for graphics with a radeon 9700 pro, but you should look into a surround sound system if you want good sound. I got a 4 piece surround with subwoofer and the game sounds excellent.

I've also noticed that if you use the following commands:

notarget
god
noclip

You can completely avoid the monsters. They won't attack you (and you can walk through walls). I've used this to run the game at the highest video settings possible without it crashing. As soon as the monsters attack though, it goes from 1-5 fps to less than 1 fps and dies.

If you want to take high res screens of the levels, this is a good way to go. Also, it's fun to add lights all around the monsters as they sit their and breath heavy. You can add and remove lights using various commands.

get's rid of the last light added (you can get rid of most of hte lights that belong in the map).

I've also found it useful to change the player run/walk speeds. To reverse them actually. As a default, you walk instead of run which is very uncommon for most FPS players. Type pm_runspeed 100 and pm_walkspeed 220 to reverse (fix) this situation.

Naturally, this only works for NVidia cards.

Once you get it, run it, check the first box, hit apply, close the window. Make sure you undo this when you're done playing with the doom 3 alpha.

And again, remember this is only for NVidia cards (I'm under the impression that the error only occurs on NVidia cards though).

I have found out something strange about doom 3. I dont know if it relevent or anything, but i was recording doom 3 with a program and as usuall when there was some action the frames droped like hell so after a minute of recording, i quit doom 3 and whatched the vid and to my suprise, where the frames droped in the game, they were not dropped in the video.

I dont no if this applies to games but maybe if we can get doom3 to run in overlay mode it would run way way smoother.

By the way the program i used to record the game is caled fraps. It records almost anything!! even screensavers

Ok, it isn't getting frames that you're not seeing, it's simply, it's simply recording at a faster rate than the game is playing at.

If you set it to record at 30 fps, and you're getting 15 fps in doom, then the video will have the first 30 frames (2 seconds of doom footage) as one second of video footage.

If doom is running at 5 fps and you record at 30, then you will have 6 seconds of doom footage compressed into 1 second of video footage.

Solution: lower the fps of the recorder until it is less than the fps of the thing that you're recording.

The grey screen problem has been addressed numerous times. Just read backwards about 10 or 15 posts (you need to get the NV30 emulator from NVidia, it's easy).

And swifty, you just need to edit your DoomConfig.cfg. I have a high quality version and a low quality version (one for taking pictures, and one for playing). I'll paste my low quality config in here in just a second, but first some notes.

If you want to look at the game in ultra high quality, give it a shot. But if your framerates are really low (less than 10 fps) before you see monsters, you had better type in "god", "noclip" and "notarget" at the console. These will stop the monsters from attacking you (I think noclip is the only essential one) and keep you alive. It also lets you walk through walls, but you have to deal with that (notarget doesn't seem to work properly, the mosnters still attack). It's not actually the monsters visible presence, but their AI and physics that cause your frames to dive.

Another tip is to find out how to turn off the sound, I've heard that increases the framerates, but personally, I'd rather cut into the graphics more.

Those two commands (in order) will kill the sound.

Games suck without sound though. Now, I have my r_mode set to 3 (640x480) in this config, but you can go lower for even better framerates (and downright hideous graphics). Just type r_mode 1 in the console, then type vidrestart. You probably already knew that much.

The particular things you should note in my config are the lower bit depth, the lack of hud and gun, the lack of specular/bump mapping, the compressed textures and the lack of shadows. Those will give you your biggest speed increases.

Finally, if you still need better frame rates, try lowering the screen size (different than changing resolution) by typing ... I forgot. Just type in the console:

These two will dump the console commands and console variables into text files for you to examine. In the cmdlist.txt look for the "sizeup" and "sizedown" (or something like that). They can give you even higher framerates.

bind F "flashlight" (a fun toy, but you need to make sure the variable "g_flashlight_shader" is set to "lights/flashlight2" instead of the default 3).

Adding lights is a blast, especially when using noclip, then you can light up mosnters from crazy angles while they sit there looking stupid. Try it with high details.

One more note. Those last two lines, I'm not sure if they work or not in the cfg. If not, you can do it in the game from the console. Just type

pm_walkspeed 220
pm_runspeed 100

This is basically like turning on "always run". When you hit the "run" key, you will walk instead. When you do nothing, you run.

I can't imagine how those would not work, and they'll help your framerates out a lot.

Oh, and before you give up on the previous config, try hitting the Function keys (F3 to F8 in particular).

Just finished downloading Doom III, made a few tweaks in the config and went for it. It runs surprisingly well on my computer (2 gig p4, radeon 9700 pro, 512 DDR) until I spawn more than 4 or 5 monsters.

I can't believe how amazing it looks. I am in complete awe.

Anyway, thank you all who helped me so very much at getting it running how I want it.

Provided I'm not too liberal with the settings, but, are the textures supposed to be this blurry? I walk up to any monster and see the lack of detail. Am I missing something?

I've noted that too. The filtering doesn't seem to look correct first of all, so I suspect it will look *different* (if not better) in the final product. It seems like they could bump up the resolution of the base color textures a bit.

Notice that the alpha does not have scalable texture sizes as Quake 3 did (of course, until added, you'd think that they would be using the highest resolution textures).

So i don't think my computer would have that hard of a time running it...Only thing is that when i start it up i see the blue loading screen thingy with words scrolling by, but right afterwards all i get is a gray flickering screen. when yr shooting or anything like that the fps drops because the new engine for sounds puts a load of stress on yr computer... turn off sounds and it should go fine ;)

The first level i got up to 60 fps and as low as 20, preety good for my system.

And oh yeah the bathroom scene scared the shit out of me, so cool.

ITS FECKED!! i downloaded the 300+ bm demo of D3 alpha from kazaa (its a .exe and if u try to run it it brings up a dos box then closes in 1/10 of a second! but if u re-name it to .rar it de-compresses fine.) but everytime i try to run doom .exe a loading screen like the Q3 one runs (as normal) then a window appears titled doom 3 with nothing but a sort of a muddy yellow colour in it and the CPU usage shoots up 2 100% and sits there. nothing happens after that. iv left it for 30mins and nothing happens to the window. i copied and pasted the dommconfig contens into my doomconfig.cfg file but that just ment that the same thing happens in full screen. HELP HEEEE!!!! plus everytime iv run it, afterwards my doomconfig.cfg file looks like jibberish. (i meen TOTAL jibberish, i know what .cfg files r sposed 2 look like : p ) help mah!! ne1 who can sort this out is truly r0x0r ;p

ive got the 364mb .rar from emule and also patched it. im running a gf-ti4200 with 42.32 detonator drivers.

So all i have to do now to get past teh grey screen is to install detonator 41.09 and use the nvemulator???

Hey guys, I got it to work. D/Led from Kazaa "doom3.e3-demo-alpha-leak" 364MB file- also downloaded "doom_iii_alpha FIX" 3.68MB file which works as well.

Specs on my comp are
p4 1.8 williamette
512 rdram Gf3 Ti200

runs at 30fps but like 8fps when enemies are up close

Be sure to use good drivers, i use Nvidia 43.45 from nvidia.com on my geforce4 4800-SE 128MB Card.

dont know what else to suggest, its all about luck remeber this is an very early alpha demo.

I got it to work with older nvidia drivers
I had the 43.45 driver but it didn't work
so I installed the 40.41 driver and it worked!!!
So d/l that one, install and you're ready to go.
Works quite fine!

i have the nv30 thing, and i check the proper box, then click accept.. but nothing happens.. the box doesnt close and say anything.. i click accept and it just sits there with no visual or audio acnoledgment that anything happened.. is this supposed to happen? do i leave the box open after doing this and then try to run the alpha? plus.... doing that doesnt work.. the alpha still gives me a grey screen, sometimes flickering, sometimes not... i have run the alpha befor.. and it worked.. since then i have restored my pc, and redownloaded the same alpha, apllied the proper patches, done the speed increase fixes, and i have not been able to get in the game, even without doing the patches and speed fixes... i ALWAYS get either a solid grey or flickering grey... all drivers are updated. and there isnt anything left to do that i can see.. Ok. I have the real doom 3 alpha leak. My specs: NV-Ge4600 128MB DDR, 2.7GHz Athlon.

Now my question to anyone who can answer it.

[When I go to the ~ screen, I type which ever level I want to play, but when it gets to the loading screen, it takes FOREVER... then, on whichever level i pick, different errors occur. Now... it kind of loads, but it doesn't run.]

The Errors:

On Map e3/e3_1: "map e3/e3_1.AAS96 out of date"

On Map e3/e3_2: "rigid body for entity[_______]not really at rest"
The [____] are 2 seperate things.

#2: "func_movable_4"

On Map e3/e3_3: "spawn class on "mal_func_clipmodel_3"
