Guns in Doom 3: Old or New School?

Finally got around to checking out the Doom 3 trailer they showed at E3 recently. It'll blow you away! I love the teasers they put into those trailers particularly for highly anticipated games like Doom 3. So I thought I'd take a look at the player weapons visible in the trailer, that I assume we can expect in the game.
I was wondering how 'old school' they'd be able to make this sequel. It looks like the answer is not very much. I guess I'm not surprised as Doom had relatively few weapons and the trend these days is to really load up and party. I don't know how I feel about that, I would have liked a traditional sequel (because I'm sure, like me, many an old timer has been looking for that Doom style thrill ever since) but I can understand a modernisation is in order. On to the guns.
The humble pistol. Where would we be without it. The answer is nowhere because it's the default weapon. Anyone else remember taking on pink demons with only a pistol? I wonder if they'll still be that dumb in Doom 3.
The reliable shotgun. The most popluar of the Doom arsenal. I think every Doom player has felt like they could take on the whole game with just this gun if only they had enough shells. How many shells to take down a pink demon? 2 if you get them just right. Here's a related question; what's your record for the number of former soldiers you could kill with one blast of the supper shotgun in Doom 2? I think mine was 7, but it was a while back.
The mild machinegun. Meh. Never was a machine gun in Doom. Don't need one when you've got...
...the demon-shredding chaingun! I remember perforating cacodemons like so many water balloons. But full of blood and guts and stuff.
The super-happy-fun-slide of the gaming world: the grenade launcher. Having it's debut in Quake the GL quickly earned the reputation of being both the weapon requiring least skill and the weapon most likely to cause you severe facial damage.
The hand-grenade. Like the grenade launcher but much less useful.
Hail to the king: the rocket launcher. The best choice for turning an imp into a meat pile.
Couple of newies in there, but it isn't really all that bad because the classics are all in there and none of the newies could possibly displace the Doom originals. Of course we're also waiting to see if the plasma and the BFG make it.
By now the REAL doomers reading this are stuttering with incredulity, that I've left out the one weapon they really crave. Oh sure they will all say that the shotgun is their favourite but they secretly lust for another: the chainsaw.
We see one chainsaw in the trailer, right in the middle, but we ain't holding it. id wouldn't release a Doom game without giving us a chainsaw would they?

Also, what the hell happened to the logo. The old III is a trillion times better than the little 3/cubed/whatever thing. It looks like they're trying to distance themselves as far as possible from the original title while still retaining the raw selling-power advantages of the doom brand. All I want to do is shoot demons with a shotgun while wandering around some vaguely gothic futuristic hell on earth scenario. I don't want some half baked, poorly executed plot or namby pamby physics engine, that's not what doom is about. Stick to what you're good at id, or is that too much to ask?

I would like to know where i can find out more about that strange weapon used for picking things up and throwing them around in doom3.You might have seen it in the E3 trailer where that guy gets
picked up by the leg and thrown to a wall.it sounds

I believe you are very much mistaken regarding "strange weapon used for picking things up." You would be referring to the HALF-LIFE 2 trailer, which DOES sport such a weapon. It's not Doom 3, but it's very cool in it's own right (and it will be released sooner).
One last thing. Not that I would EVER think to criticize the Doom 3 graphics (lest hordes of demons spawn from hell to eat me in my sleep) but does anyone else find the pathetic little puffs of smoke from the rocket launcher a little less than a convincing smoke trail? It's not a big deal, it's just that everything else stands out as being the pinnacle of realism. Well, it's probably just a temporary "alpha phase" issue. Just a though.

The rocket needs major beefing up and if they stick with those cigar smoke rings I'll be most disappointed.
Thank God. They preserved all the original DOOM staples (except maybe the chainsaw, and no, I don't consider the BFG/Plasma Rifle a staple, as I never bothered with them unless a Cyberdemon was looking to chunk me up.)
Here's to playing "Shotgun Trombone Solo in F triple-sharp" all over again. Now if only they preserved the bull-demons I so loved to hunt with my "Bessy," I'll be in heaven. There is NOTHING like the feeling of pumping a pissed-off shaved ape with a mouthful of razor blades full of lead.

The Doom 3 alpha can be downloaded off of Kazaa. Do a search for software and type "Doom 3". The title of the file may vary, but it will be 372,833 kb or there about. That's how you get it. For info on what to do with it there is a convenient help forum on this very website.

It's a BIG read, and it's very discouraging at first, but if you read down for a few hundred lines you'll find everything you need in a direct, friendly format.
Also, there are two new Doom 3 screenies from the quakecon multiplayer demo, and one of them features the rocket launcher. Too bad it doesn't show the smoke trail, eh EvEm_Relic?

Where are the subs? I've been all over Hell and can't find a single sub. And i haven't seen any chainsaws yet, either. I've played the Iwo Jima map about 50 times and haven't seen a single one.

Weres the weapons? Peronaly I like the plasma gun, chain gun and chainsaw. The new Doom looks cool but I cant find any plasma guns. The game looks pretty cool, but not origonal. And were are the toughest DEMONDS, come on is that it. The trailer looks ok to, but weres the original stuff?!

Ive been playing Far Cry and it has raised the bar so high that if Doom 3 is same old Doom just with a better AI and graphics then I think that ID is going to eat a buch of unrealized profit. I loved Doom, does anyone remember playing multiplayer on DWANGO ( this was Doom Wide Area Network Gaming Organization on dialup, until the internet killed it)? If this new Doom doesn't offer something unique its going to go to the hardcore fans and then into the bargain bin.
I LOVE THE CYBERDEMON AND THE MANCUBUS! doom isnt doom without them or without any other of the such classic demons. double barreld shotgun rules! also doom 3 must have a point wher the player is in hell itself other wise itll get boring seeing the same old scenery over and over again, but i guess we will all find out wen it finnaly coes out, oh yeh by the way I AM DOOMS BIGGEST FAN! and i love you all.
I really hate the fact that they didn't think about players who like a left-handed type of view instead of the damn right-handed view. We could almost say they were better with the old school style; when it was in the middle. Half-Life gave a choice.

This game pretty bomb, i have it because it came out a while ago. All the origanols are in it except for the double barrel, but the bfg and plasma and chainsaw are still there. I kicked ass in all the dooms and in the third. but this one dosnt have the same feel to it. its not the doom way. that dosnt look like an imp, what the fuck is this this. im stickin with the oldies, this new shit is a crock of crap.
