My Impressions of Doom3: Conclusion
Category / Games
After setting down some initial impressions of single and multiplayer Doom3 and reading some comments made on this site and others, here's my conclusion about Doom3.
The first thing people should realise is that this is not a new game, it's a remake of an old game with new technology. A lot of the criticism I read follows a similar theme: It may look better but, it doesn't have as good gameplay as FarCry.
And perhaps those opinions can't be argued with. Since Doom, we've been moving steadily out of the dungeon and into wide terrain based environments and varied gameplay. So to step back into the dungeon, back 10 years of gaming fashion may not please some people.
But man, when I found squishy, I knew why I love this game. It's like being a fan of a cartoon and then seeing a movie version with real life actors and special effects. Although not complete crap like Scooby Doo, but an awsome, faithfully brought to life version.
This is the Doom id wanted to make back then. This is how they saw it in their heads and they felt that they finally had the technical ability to realise their original vision.
It's still scarying the pants off me. I've banged my knee on the underside of my desk, flew back so hard I nearly brought the bookshelf behind me crashing to the floor, I've scared my wife to death because her PC is next to mine and I jump so suddenly, I made our dogs jump up and start barking. What game have you ever played that does that?
This is the most honest and amusing review of Doom 3 I've read.
"Dark and scary corners obviously hide enemies, no need to check it with the flash light, I just shoot first and hear the misc monster die, and that's it. But that's not the way games are meant to be played, regardless of gaming experience of level of boredom. That's why I go for the home alone - naked - lights off - headphones combination, so I can get involved in the action as much as possible. Doom 3 is a scary game, but some prerequisites have to be brushed upon first: a good attitude towards the game, a fair level of excitement and understanding of the "Doom" concept."
After playing Multiplayer quite a bit more I'm no longer really down on that as much as I was initially. If you love deathmatch, then this is your game. It's an id signature, after all they invented it!
And by the looks of Doom3Fortress we may have a return to the salad days of multiplayer Quake and QuakeII, where it seems every gamer and/or his grandma was making a mod.
This Doom is far and away the best Doom game ever. Not merely for the souped up graphics and sound but the the feel of the game, the story is more involving, the frights more terrifying and the monsters are far more evil. If you want to get the most out of Doom you just have to play it at Veteran or Nightmare. Anything lower will be like a stroll in the park to today's, experienced, jaded, "I dare you to try and entertain me" crowd. Oh and try to play aroung midnight, with no one else awake in the house, in the dark, with the headphones on or surround sound.
I'll leave the final word to Nazzo at Pixelrage
"The single player part is great, I enjoyed it a lot and it was exactly what I expected of a Doom game. Some compared it to Serious Sam, some said it's nowhere even near the original Doom, some said it simply sucks. Can't argue with them and their expectations, I don't know what kind of game had they been waiting for all these long four years, I for one hoped for a Doom game, and by God, I got one."

Well, thank God at least somebody appreciates my efforts here! My mom had me locked up in the attic when she found out I was playing games naked, she actually said "... that's why you don't have a girlfriend!". Hmpf, women. Yeah, why don't you bring me some beer and then go wash dinner and cook some clothes, or whatever? That's why I never got married to my cousin in the first place.

Every time I play I end up at some point jumping back about 3 feet scared to buggery. The more I play as well the more it feels like doom/II (which is a GOOD thing).
I like the touches like finding one zombie feeding on another - big shock for me was when the one being eaten got up and attacked as well!
The PDA works well, enough to pad out the story but not distract from the main event.
The weapons are awsome - I have the chain gun which rocks, and just got the plasma gun which is wicked.
