Value for Money

Recently I've played Doom3, Far Cry, Half Life 2 and Battlefield Vietnam. And in the value for money stakes Battlefield Vietnam wins hands down. Far Cry comes second and Doom3 and Half Life 2 are way down the end somewhere.

That's not to say I didn't like those games or enjoy playing them but they all cost about the same amount and I've gotten more enjoyment out of Battlefield Vietnam than all the others.

It's simply a matter of longevity. I've been playing Battlefield Vietnam for months now (and before that Battlefield 1942 for months as well) mainly because the game is so huge and so much fun to play online, there are plenty of maps out of the box and there are new maps and mods released by the game makers regularly over the life of the game.

Now when Doom 3 came out I got all excited and wrote lots about how great it was. But I have to come clean, after completnig the game It's sat on the shelf gathering dust. Out of the box you get a small number of death match levels to play online with. So for my 100 bucks I got about 25 hours of single player game and a few hours of multiplayer till I got bored.

$100 for ~25 hours of gameplay versus $100 for months of gameplay. It's pretty clear where the value for money is.

Now what about these 2 newest mega-games. Doom 3 and Half Life 2 arrived with so much fan fare, much touted immersive single player adventures and... wait for it... multiplayer deathmatch. Are you kidding me?

Yeah sure death match is fun for a bit but it's the oldest form of multiplayer gaming around. How can 2 of the most revolutionary, graphically intense games arrive with only deathmatch? It's the least revolutionary form of multiplayer gaming.

And now we hear that id Software is releasing an expansion pack. There's nothing to expand! Adding more multiplayer modes to deathmatch is not expansion, it's getting around to finishing it properly.

And Valve has made a big announcement, that I received via Steam news. There gonna break all boundaries with this one. They're releasing the long anticipated update to HL2 deathmatch: the crowbar.

Give me a break. No, better yet, give me my money back.

Doom3 sits on the shelf unused and gathering dust and Half Life 2 is sitting in my Steam folder getting fragmented or whatever unused programs do on your hard drive. As far as Multiplayer First Person Shooters go I think Dice has the whole genre wrapped up. From Codename Eagle to Battlefield Vietnam they've continually offered excellent value for money. I'm hanging out for Battlefield 2.

Well I agree... kinda.
Doom3 does seem like its at a dead end.
But HL2 has life in it yet, and having a legit Steam account will open up more gaming.
You're comparing BFV which is an expansion of BF1942, so of course it is building on the success of another game. They both owe a great deal to Codename Eagle.
I was just thinking the other day that I've had more fun with CE and BF than any other game. HL2 came close though, while it lasted. As for extended playability we'll have to wait and see.
