Real Life Battlefield Vietnam!

I went to the Amberley Air Show today and caught some aircraft I thought would appeal to the Battlefield Vietnam croud. The Chinook and the Huey are still in use today in the Australian Armed Forces. Read on to check them out...

The Chinook is a big bastard and the rotors bend right down. I'm standing and I can touch the end of it. We saw a couple of them lifting cannon over the airfield. Unfortunately while they could lift a Sheridan in days past, they can't life any modern tanks because they're way too heavy.

The two sets of rotors are linked to the 2 turbine engines on the sides at the rear via driveshats and gearboxes. The rotors counter-rotate which just looks awsome to watch. Even though It can't lift a tank it can still do some very cool things. It can land on water (it floats!) and drop the back ramp so that the marines can drive their launches right into the aircraft.

The pilot told us a funny story too. They sometimes take paratroopers in Chinooks but of course in a helicopter the troopers deploy from a stationary, hovering arcraft. The ones who have never done it before invariable tumble arse over, out of the helicopter because they're used to having a lot of forward momentum when they exit the aircraft, hehehe.

The Iroquois (aka "Huey") Helicopters made a real distintive thump-thump-thump when in the air. They're still in use today!

Here's some camping looser explaining the theory of heli-spawn raping. At least this is what I picture in my mind when I experience their annoying tactics in BF:V :)

And here are a couple of Squirrel helicopters demonstrating it for real :)
